The Meg Review: Monster movies are meant to be CGI spectacles that make for mindless fun flicks. 'The Meg' is no different with its straightforward premise. Hollywood's obsession with sharks date all the way back to 1975, so this film is mainly an excuse for Jason Statham to take on a massive shark underwater. A big enough action star like Statham calls for a decent budget to be committed to this endeavour. This is evident as the CGI is a few notches higher to make it appear better than a B-grade flick.

Jason Statham knows exactly what he signed up for, and he has the right amount of fun playing Jonas Taylor, a retired rescue diver who is called back into action. Statham's training as a diver comes handy here, and he commits to the role with a sincerity that does the film a huge favour. Chinese actors Li Bingbing & Shuya Sophia Cai have interesting chemistry with each other and are the only actors besides Statham to watch out for. The rest of the cast is practically redundant, and therefore dispensable. The screenplay doesn't give the audience much to care about – the sentimental scenes don’t resonate too deep, and the comedy doesn’t hit home either. So when the scenes don't involve sharks or the actors mentioned before, it's hard to stay focused on the proceedings.

Perhaps the biggest drawback is the writing which does not narrow down on the film’s tonality. There are points where it takes itself a little too seriously, and others when it aims straight for cheesy popcorn blockbuster status. Little surprise then that director Jon Turteltaub doesn’t know what kind of film he’s making either. The momentum picks up towards the end when the monster mayhem escalates to bigger proportions, but it turns out to be too little, too late. Even if mega-sharks and Statham are enough to lure you to ‘The Meg’, check your expectations before you dive in.


SYNOPSIS

    A deep-sea submersible-part of an international undersea observation program has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific...with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep-sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer, against the wishes of his daughter Suyin, to save the crew and the ocean itself from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon.

    What no one could have imagined is that, years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying creature. Now, teamed with Suyin, he must confront his fears and risk his own life to save everyone trapped below...bringing him face to face once more with the greatest and largest predator of all time.

We're going to need a bigger boat for all these shark movies.

On the tail of "The Shallows," ''47 Meters Down," ''Dark Tide" and, of course, the seminal "Sharknado," comes "The Meg," the latest in a growing school of shark movies, all of which, to varying degrees, use our fond memories of "Jaws" as bait to reel us back in the water again. The hook on this one? Bigger shark.

To my disappointment, the title of "The Meg" does not refer to Meg Ryan (though it's nice to imagine an action movie revolving around Jason Statham making precarious escapes from the "When Harry Met Sally..." star). No, the titular Meg of Jon Turteltaub's thriller is the Megalodon, which sounds like either a "Transformers" character or a heavy metal band.

It is, in fact, a prehistoric underwater dinosaur, a kind of supersized shark that went extinct more than 2 million years ago. According to scientists, they could grow up to 60 feet long. According to Hollywood producers, it's more like 75 feet or more. In "The Meg," a Megalodon's dorsal fin sticking out from the water looks from afar like a catamaran.

Naturally, history could not keep such a predator so perfect for today's movies all to itself, especially when one could be strategically found somewhere in the Pacific, conveniently close to the world's second largest movie market, China. Based on Steve Alten's "Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror," ''The Meg" has been in development for some two decades, only to finally emerge as American-Chinese hybrid production.

A state-of-the-art underwater research facility, bankrolled by a cocky young billionaire (Rainn Wilson), uncovers a deeper realm of the Mariana Trench that has for centuries been separated from the rest of the ocean by a cloudy, cold membrane. Soon after a research expedition pushes through the layer in a submersible, they are attacked by an unseen creature, cutting them off from the base above.

For the rescue mission, 11,000 meters down, the team reluctantly turns to the only expert at such a deep dive: Jonas Taylor (Statham). The chief researcher, Dr. Minway Zhang (Winston Chao), elects to quickly bring Taylor out of retirement (he's living above a bar in Thailand) against the warnings of Dr. Heller (Robert Taylor), who believes Taylor reckless for an earlier deep-water nuclear submarine rescue where as many died as lived.

Statham, the sleek, gravelly voiced action star, is lured back underwater because one of the three people trapped — Lori (Jessica McNamee) — happens to be his ex-wife. With remarkably little trouble, he goes from boozing in Thailand to easily piloting a vessel straight down to the seafloor. Statham, sometimes a one-man show, here has a fairly large ensemble around him, one assembled to appeal to moviegoers both East and West. Chinese actress Li Bingbing stars as the divorced single-mother daughter of Dr. Zhang, and Taylor's love interest. Also in the mix as crew members are Ruby Rose ("Orange is the New Black") and Page Kennedy.

But the main draw in "The Meg" is obviously the giant shark which, after years stuck at the bottom of the sea, is awfully hungry. There are the expected close scrapes, surprisingly good production design, PG-13 rated chompings and fluctuating levels of even giant-shark-movie plausibility. What is it about sharks that inspires such absurdity in plots? Much of "The Meg" aims for a familiar popcorn mix of frights and ridiculousness that may well do the trick for cheap August thrills, or those who pine for, say, "Deep Blue Sea."

"The Meg" is best when it acknowledges its derivativeness, just one more silly shark movie in an ocean full of them. Its finest moment is when Statham, having willingly jumped into the water near the Megalodon, channels Dory and murmurs to himself: "Just keep swimming."

"The Meg," a Warner Bros. release, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for action/peril, bloody images and some language. Running time: 113 minutes. Two stars out of four

Morris (Rainn Wilson), a billionaire, puts together a team of scientists and deep sea explorers to study the oceans. They come across the theory that there is another world waiting to be explored beneath the sea bed in Chinese waters. They penetrate the cloud layer (yes the science has gone for a toss here) formed some thousands of meter down and indeed find a new pocket of unexplored territory teeming with never seen before sea flora and fauna. They are attacked by a giant squid and then by a Meg. The Meg is a megalodon, a supposedly extinct 90-foot shark that could bite a whale in half and still has room for more in its stomach.

Our motley crew of characters include Zhang (Winston Chao) and his daughter, Sunyi (Li Bingbing), a single mother with a cute daughter Meiying (Shuya Sophia Cai). Lori (Jessica McNamee),  who happens to be ex-wife of Jason Statham’s character, Toshi (Masi Oka), and a character called “The Wall” (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) go beneath the ‘clouds’ in a special Mars explorer like vehicle and get stuck there. Mac (Cliff Curtis), calls upon his former buddy, celebrated deep sea rescuer Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) to rescue them. He’s a borderline alcoholic but agrees for the last mission because, well, his ex-wife’s life is at stake. He has bad blood with the onboard doctor, Heller (Robert Taylor), which gets resolved during the course of the film. Jaxx (Ruby Rose) and DJ (Page Kennedy), are also included in this varied cast.

The film carries forward the spirit Jaws (1975) but thankfully deviates from the tropes put in place by the cult classic and follows its own course. Jon Turteltaub has kept a relentless pace throughout. The shark here is seen as a supernatural entity and not really a deranged killer as seen in Jaws and its derivatives. And there is a nice twist in the middle to keep you hooked till the end. The CGI creature keeps changing its size however. And somehow, you stop being afraid of it after a while. Jason Statham fighting a prehistoric giant shark is a drool-worthy idea. You want him to do some absurd things like kick the shark on its nose or take a knife to it and kill it after a vicious bout of hand-to-hand combat. You keep waiting for such a moment to happen and it does come towards the end, where defying the laws of physics he goes against the monster with a harpoon. The only question you want to ask veteran director Jon Turteltaub, a man famous for such films as Cool Runnings and National Treasure, is that why did he make us wait so long for this moment. And why didn't he put more moments like this in the film.

Though there is a spark there between Sunyi and Jonas, the director has chosen not to ignite it further and it remains untended. It must be mentioned that the Chinese star Bingbing  isn’t just relegated to being eye candy and is seen seen taking risks and has as much screen time as Statham. A sign perhaps, of the growing clout of the Chinese market in Hollywood films. There are a couple of jokes about foreigners not speaking Chinese correctly, which further cements that idea.

The film, shot mostly at the sea, offers some stunning underwater scenes and some decent CGI. It hovers between being being a gloried B movie and a certified A movie. Jason Statham who is mostly seen in rescue vehicles doesn’t get enough action space, though a couple of his scenes with the shark, especially when he’s towed through the water away are totally worth his presence. If the film does well, be sure that other monstrous creatures are sure to surface from their secret hideout. Though the film doesn’t show an end which can take the sequel forward...

Picking up a short while after Firefly left off, the crew of the space transport Serenity are harboring a highly sought after fugitive - River, a girl with incredible mental ability and amazing fighting skills. The Alliance, the rulers of the galaxy, have sent one of their top operatives after her. He is a one-man army and will stop at nothing to accomplish his mission. Meanwhile for the crew of Serenity it is business as usual, and that business generally involves smuggling, stealing and doing whatever gets them a payout.

The crew of the Serenity is getting desperate. They have lain lower and lower to protect their doctor, Simon Tam, and his telepathic traumatized little sister, River, from the alliance, whom he rescued her from a year earlier. This has made getting jobs harder and now they are desperate. When they take River on a robbery during which Reavers (humans who have gone crazy and turned into cannibals) attack, Simon decides that its time to leave the crew of the Serenity for his and River's safety. She then mutters "Miranda" and goes berserk and nearly shoots Capt. Malcolm Reynolds, until her brother says the safety word to put her to sleep. Reynolds decides to take them back on board for safety, only now an alliance operative is on their tracks and making Reynolds determined to find out what "Miranda" is and what the Alliance is hiding.

The pre-title teaser provides backstory for those unfamiliar with the Firefly TV series. The events in the teaser occur prior to the first episode of the TV series: The Universal logo changes to show ships leaving 25th Century Earth as a teacher's voice-over describes the exodus from "Earth that was" and the terraforming and colonization of planets in the new 'verse.'

An introduction to the system government known as the Alliance follows, mentioning the war for system-wide control -- the War of Independence, as it's known to the losing opposition, the Browncoats. This classroom scenario is seen to be the memory or dream of River Tam (Summer Glau), who is in a drugged sleep under confinement at the Alliance Academy facility, being groomed as some form of programmed assassin. River's brother, Dr. Simon Tam (Sean Maher), infiltrates the lab and frees her, but the breakout was a security recording viewed after the event by the Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor). He has orders to deal with the security lapse and the project director's failure as well as to find River and bring her back.

The credit sequence, set eight months after the events of the teaser, introduces us to the "Firefly" class freighter Serenity, owned and captained by former Independent soldier Malcolm (Mal) Reynolds (Nathan Fillion). Serenity is about to break atmo on the planet Lilac on one of the crews' not-always-legal jobs -- this time a bank heist. The crew members (all familiar to Firefly fans) are the pilot, Hoban "Wash" Washburn (Alan Tudyk); his wife Zoe (Gina Torres), second in command, a veteran and war comrade of Mal's; hired gun Jayne Cobb (Adam Baldwin); and the engineer, Kaywinnet Lee "KayLee" Frye (Jewel Staite).

Two faces familiar from the series are no longer aboard, but we meet them later: the "companion," Inara Serra (Morena Baccarin), and a shepherd (preacher), Derria Book (Ron Glass). (For information on why Inara and Book left the ship, see IMDB discussion boards.)

After River's escape, the Tams found sanctuary with this crew, but Mal plans to make use of River's psychic abilities on this job -- against Simon's wishes. It begins without any major hitch, then River senses and warns them of arriving Reavers. On the border planets, Reavers are feared for their unprovoked, cannibalistic, frenzied attacks; they are only known from urban legend on the central planets.

The crew has an eventful escape, Mal shooting a man who wanted to escape rather than letting him be captured by the Reavers. Back aboard in relative safety, Simon punches Mal for endangering River, then declares their intention to leave the ship. Kaylee, who has a crush on Simon, is distressed.

Fanty and Mingo (the Feldman twins), Mal's sponsors for the job, are waiting for them at the Maidenhead Bar on Beaumonde, and want more of the take. River enters the bar and sees an ad on the viewscreen. This triggers her combat training; she whispers 'Miranda' and begins systematically taking out everyone around her. The twins run. Jayne tries to stop River and fails, while Mal gets to his gun and aims at the exact moment River aims a captured weapon back at him.

Simon enters, sending her to sleep with a code word. Mal brings them back aboard Serenity. Meanwhile the Operative, who ordered the broadcast of the trigger to expose River, is viewing the bar's security feed on his command ship, and a profile of Mal.

Wash suggests a talk with Mr. Universe (David Krumholtz), a kind of media hacker with knowledge of all kinds, who lives with his 'Lovebot' on his own moon. He tells the crew the advert code triggering River's combat training was high level Alliance military. There is something they want and River is part of it. Inara greets the Operative at the temple where she's living; with her intuition and training, she realizes something is wrong.

Meanwhile, the crew arrives at Haven, the mining colony where Shepherd Book now has a congregation and are greeted by him. Book has unusual knowledge of security, criminal and military activity, which puzzles Mal; no explanation is ever given. Book advises Mal on how an attack by an Operative against him could occur. Referring to Book's past, Mal says "You have to tell me about it sometime." Book replies, "No...I don't."

Inara makes contact with Serenity, asking for help. Mal, sensing a trap ("You saw us fight? No? -- Trap!"), decides to go see her. The Operative is at the temple -- of course it was a trap -- and he outlines the trouble River will bring Mal, trying to get him to hand River over. Mal shoots him, then fights him. Inara sets off a flash bomb, and they escape in the nearby shuttle while Serenity deploys decoys to throw the Operative off the trail.

Jayne, after arguing with Mal about keeping River, tries to take her from the locker she's held in. Overpowering him, she escapes. On the bridge, she shows Mal the planet Miranda. Miranda's existence has been suppressed -- all mention of it deleted from charts and records -- and it's in the region known to be Reaver territory.

The Alliance gets to Haven before the crew returns, destroying the settlement. They find Book, dying, beside the settlement's cannon, which he used to shoot down the attacking craft. His last words tell Mal to have strength in his beliefs. They realize the Operative attacked all places Mal could have gone, cutting off escape. Mal finds another way; they disguise Serenity as a Reaver ship and make their way to Miranda, passing through a Reaver flotilla. Their disguise successful, they land on Miranda and find a planet apparently suitable for life with breathable air, power, intact cities and infrastructure. But all the people are dead. The inhabitants appear to have simply lost the will to live and laid down to die: at work, on the road, in their houses.They find a survey ship with a holographic recording made by its last surviving team member, a report never sent. The recording reveals the Alliance put chemicals into the air processors on Miranda to stabilize the population's behavior. It worked too well. Almost everyone stopped doing anything to live and died. A fractional percentage, however, had a drastically different response to the chemical: they became insanely violent and aggressive. The crew realizes this damaged and dangerous remnant of Miranda's inhabitants are the Reavers. The Alliance created them and tried to bury the evidence just before the War. This knowledge affected River, and the release of the tension in her makes her throw up. She says lucidly "I'm all right" after this. River apparently picked up the memory from some of the Alliance chiefs who came to see her training and the memory was also triggered by the code advert. Mal decides to broadcast the hologram from Mr. Universe's moon.

Mal calls Mr. Universe, who says come ahead. But he's already held prisoner, and as soon as Mal breaks contact, he's killed by the Operative. As they pass back through the Reaver flotilla, Mal mans the Haven cannon they took for the ship's disguise. He blasts one of the Reaver ships and Serenity runs for it, Reavers in hot pursuit. The Operative's fleet is concealed in the atmospheric ion cloud of Mr. Universe's moon, and they're surprised when Serenity comes right at the command ship. They're even more surprised by the many Reavers on Serenity's tail. Wash expertly slips Serenity through the ensuing battle, covered by the confusion, until they get tagged by an electronic pulse weapon that takes out Serenity's electrical systems. Wash manages a dead stick crash landing, skidding into an open hangar bay at the end of the runway. Serenity loses one of its attitude engines, turning 180 degrees facing out of the hangar as it comes to rest, leaving them open to attack by the Reaver ship following them in. A spear weapon breaks the window, impaling Wash. He dies not long afterwards. Zoe tries to free him, but Mal sees another spear launched and gets Zoe out of range. They and everone else get inside Mr. Universe's complex. Jayne and Zoe arrange a defensive strategy, while Mal goes to broadcast the message. He finds Mr. Universe dead, but the Lovebot activates at Mal's approach, delivering Mr. Universe's last message on how to find a hidden transmitter the Alliance would have missed when destroying his equipment.

The Operative, having escaped his ship's destruction in a lifepod, arrives shortly afterwards and also triggers the Lovebot message intended for Mal; he follows Mal to the transmitter. On the hangar level, Reavers attack. Zoe gets slashed in the back taking close combat revenge. Kaylee gets hit, and Simon, realizing his medical bag was left behind out where the Reavers are, stands up looking for it and also gets hit. He apologizes to River for leaving. She says "You always take care of me...My turn." She dives through a gap in the blast door they were defending; throws Simon's bag back, grabs a fallen weapon and fights with it before closing the door's manual override and being grabbed by Reavers.

Mal gets to the transmitter, has a massive fight with the Operative and manages to beat him this time, letting him live then setting him to watch the evidence while Mal broadcasts it.

River's battle with the Reavers continues, with her training ensuring she's the last fighter standing. Mal returns to the group as power returns to the complex and they're wondering whether River survived. The blast door reopens, revealing her standing alone with bladed weapons in her hands as the wall is demolished. Alliance troops storm in demanding "Weapons down;" they request a kill order from the Operative. He tells them to lower weapons. "We're finished."

At an outdoor funeral service for the fallen crew members and friends, there are memorials for Wash, Book, and Mr. Universe. Rebuilding work on Serenity comes next; we see Kaylee and Simon kissing, observed from above by River. Before he leaves, the Operative comes to tell Mal he has weakened the Alliance, but they're not gone, and not forgiving. Mal meets Inara aboard as they prepare to leave, asking if she's ready to get back to civilized life. She's not sure. "Good answer," he says. River is in the co-pilot seat as Mal goes to the pilot chair; she seems to know what she's doing and lifts the ship before Mal quite realizes what she's up to. He tells her how important it is to love your ship. A panel tears loose from the hull as Serenity disappears into the black sky. Mal, voice-over, in an urgent tone: "What was that?"

Synopsis: In Boston, there is an unknown epidemic and the population is consuming the Hydropure water and vegetables from Whitefield Corporation. The City Hall Secretary, Taylor Lambert, contacts a newspaper journalist, Lisa Wallace, expecting to give evidence of a conspiracy that his partner Connie is collecting. However, Glenda is captured and murdered by the guards, and Lambert shoots the Mayor and takes a sample of his blood to give to Lisa. Lambert is hunted and wounded by the police. He meets the journalist, Ben Mosher, who writes for the sensationalist column ‘Mystery Science’ in the same newspaper. Spend enough time inside the ‘Quietest Room in the World’ and, if firsthand accounts are to be believed, you will slowly begin to lose your mind. Within the first few minutes, you will learn that even the slightest movement of your body – a twitch of the shoulder, a gulp, a shrug – makes sounds. In about 15 minutes, you will begin to lose your sense of space – you will be enveloped in darkness, sonically and mentally. Your screams will be loud, but they will die almost instantly – there are no echoes in the Quietest Room in the World. No one on the outside will be able to hear you. After half an hour, you will faint.

It’s unlikely that John Krasinski’s new film replicates these sensations but A Quiet Place has that rare ability to evoke not only psychological reactions, but also physical ones - you might not faint, but you will gasp, you will perspire, and you will certainly be able to hear your heartbeat . And it’s Krasinski’s first time directing horror, which, probably after comedy, is the most difficult genre to get right, and the easiest to mess up.

What this film has – and so many other horror movies don’t – is the patience that is so necessary for horror to work. So often with these films we see an almost scientific approach to scares – it is almost as if a committee has sat down and decided that to be effective, the film must hurl unseen objects towards the audience, and punctuate moments of silence with loud bangs. This never works. And Krasinski’s approach as director is to systematically dismantle these sad trends that have overtaken mainstream horror films these days. A Quiet Place is an effortless distillation of the three elements that define filmmaking: sound, light and actors. With barely 10 lines between the four of them, the central actors convey such raw emotions with just their faces that it makes you wonder why performances such as this are never up for Oscars. This happened last year with Split, in which James McAvoy knocked it out of the park with the performance of a lifetime. In A Quiet Place, there are scenes in which you can feel, along with Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, the fear of emerging death, the pain of actual death, and the freedom of potential death.

And there isn’t really time for anything else in their world, a world whose stakes the film establishes in its very first scene. There is a larger story here, of course, but A Quiet Place is utterly unconcerned about the machinations of governments and the epic final stands of the military. All it cares about is one family, united by loss, and grappling for survival on an almost daily basis.

They live on a large farmhouse surrounded by a dense forest. In the forest lurk mysterious creatures that are attracted to sounds. Hearing these sounds sends the creatures into a murderous rampage, which was perhaps the reason why most of humanity seems to have died - ‘they hear you, they hunt you,’ is the film’s catchy tagline. The Abbotts are still alive, even after 479 days, but only because they’ve taken all the precautions. Their home is surrounded by lights, their bunkers are stocked, they speak only in sign language, and they have enough evasive manoeuvres planned in case of an emergency. And it takes A Quiet Place less than five minutes to establish its imaginative setting and to set up its ingenious rules – all of which it does wordlessly. For nearly all of its 90 minute run time, A Quiet Place is virtually silent. In an age when loud explosions are seen as currency, this is a film that savours the whistling of the wind, the blowing of a breeze and the rustling of autumn leaves.

Every time one of Evelynn and Lee Abbott’s children steps on a broken twig, or topples over a lantern, you will experience what true horror really feels like.

And because of this limited scope, we, as an audience, are freed of all the excess that is usually slathered on these movies – it doesn’t matter what brought these creatures to our planet, it doesn’t matter whether or not there are pockets of survivors hidden away, and it doesn’t matter if the Abbotts will survive till rescue comes.

All that matters is the next moment. And to sustain this level of suspense for close to 90 minutes is a task even some of the so-called veteran horror filmmakers routinely fail at. In A Quiet Place, Krasinski brings an almost M Night Shyamalanesque tone – serene, unnerving, and when you least expect it, stunningly emotional. Beneath it’s genre thrills, it is a story about parenthood.Krasinski, a parent himself with real life partner Blunt, mounts several immaculately conceived set pieces that are some of the finest you’ll ever see in a film like this, and it all comes to a head in the film’s centrepiece – a scene involving childbirth, featuring an Emily Blunt performance that works on more levels than you or I can comprehend.

If you’re lucky enough to watch it in a theatre equipped with a state-of-the-art Atmos sound system, it will be a revelatory movie-going experience – sort of like the first time you watched an IMAX 3D movie. It’s the sort of film that deserves to be experienced with a large crowd, where the slightest crunch of popcorn can earn you a solid stink-eye, with friends -- you dragged along by force -- sitting in rapt fear.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Review: Visual effects have indeed come a long way since Steven Spielberg’s ‘Jurassic Park’ in 1993. The CGI-heavy series received a fresh shot in the arm with 2015’s ‘Jurassic World’, bringing new talent, and new dinosaurs into the mix. ‘Fallen Kingdom’ tries a different take by changing things up a bit for the series. A dormant volcano on the abandoned island of Isla Nublar threatens to bury the revived dinosaurs. This catastrophic natural disaster compels Owen & Claire to team up once more as they try to save these magnificent creatures.

Without revealing much else, this premise takes the majority of the action out its usual element, and for the most part, the film is better off for it. Director J. A. Bayona utilises these new rules to infuse some much-needed terror. What’s somewhat lacking, however, is the emotional connection to the story as a whole. Sure, Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are both great performers and familiarity with their characters allow a semblance of emotional investment. But it’s too few and far between set-pieces that tend to get tedious after a while, affecting the pacing along the way. It also doesn’t help that the new characters bring little to the story and some old ones, such as Jeff Goldblum’s highly anticipated return as Ian Malcolm, are a significant letdown.

Hidden in the midst of it all is an intriguing debate on whether it’s worth saving a species once extinct, now capable of returning the world to ancient times. A poignant moment where a Brachiosaurus is destroyed, further begs the question of this dilemma. Sadly, this whole angle is barely explored, although one suspects it might become the focal point of the next entry in the series. Keeping that aside, there’s a lot to savour in the devastation of expendable scenery, and extras. ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ excels when it allows the real stars – the CGI dinosaurs – to shine, and roar louder than most of their predecessors.

Ant Man And The Wasp Review: MCU! Just how do they do it? Despite hordes of Marvel films being unleashed on the audience at regular intervals, superhero exhaustion is nowhere in sight. Set after 'Captain America: Civil War' and leading up to the events of ''Avengers: Infinity War','the Ant-man sequel is a thrilling fun ride that engages you emotionally and amuses you with its CGI antics and comic demeanour.

The sequel sees Scott Lang smartly juggling between his fatherhood duties, tackling the FBI and a new superhero mission. Though the shrinking ability of the protagonists is the film’s USP, what lies at the heart of this film is the father-son bond between Casey-Scott and Hank-Hope.

Peyton Reed lets human relationships drive the narrative. Not once does he allow the ‘juicy tech stuff’ to own his film, which is refreshing and perhaps the reason why Marvel films command such a massive fan base across the globe.

Michael Pena’s superb presence and rapid-fire monologue coupled with a rant on truth serum turns out to be the film’s funniest scene. However, what does feel underwhelming are the ‘villains’ or the lack of real ones per se.
Overall, 'Ant-Man' and the Wasp is the Marvel underdog that scores big, replicating the nature of the ongoing Football World Cup. It also explains why Lang didn’t join the Avengers in Infinity War. Watch it!
