out of africa
Dr. Zhivago goes to Africa. In other words, a film whose "look" overwhelms its characters. Although the scenes with Brandauer, in the beginning, are pretty good, leading you to hope that maybe you haven't signed on to watch an exercise in boredom, along comes Redford and his love scenes with Streep, which resemble nothing so much as an extended Ralph Lauren ad, and whatever interest you may have experienced is effectually extinguished. Solid C.
All the cinematic elements of this movie as a collective whole are perfection in my opinion, and they've done proper justice to an amazing real life story. I think it's one of the best movies ever made.
An epic, picturesque romantic tale based on Baroness Karen Blixen's memoir. Streep was Oscar-nominated for her role as Blixen, Redford is solid as her adventurous lover, Brandauer won the Golden Globe for his role as Blixen's husband. Streep and Redford have great chemistry and their relationship makes the film. Winning 7 Oscars for Best Picture, Pollack as Best Director, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Production design, Score and Sound. Sweeping with intelligent directing, great performances and magnificent photography. I give it a 5/5.
Nominated for 11 Academy Awards, won 7, not the least of which was Best Score. There is simply nothing to dislike about this film. The acting is superb. The cinematography cannot be equaled, as Kenya is just gorgeous. The score is something you can listen to over and over again. And, if you do not know who the real Karen Blixen is, you should research her and her life. She was an extraordinary woman and a district in Kenya called Karen is named after her. Mention has to be made her of the on-screen chemistry between Redford and Streep. It sizzles and it is very easy to transition their roles into the real lives of Blixen and Finch Haddon. Blixen's husband, Bror, was a rotter and a womanizing philanderer who gave Blixen syphilis in the first year of their marriage. She should have died from the arsenic treatments that were used to treat her but she survived with permanent numbness in her legs. She divorced Bror but it was too late for her and Finch Haddon, as he died in a plane crash. I cannot imagine what that was like for her. She did persevere and went on to write "Out of Africa" and the great "Babette's Feast" plus other books. Do see this film and do find out about Karen. Both are worth delving into, even though it is gut-wrenching at times! What a film! What a woman!
Great acting, watched it for the story between Redford & Streep, then discovered her handsome husband and even handsomer friend,Berkeley Cole.Michael Kitchen is still gorgeous in just released season 7 of Foyle's War.Have to admit I was riveted every time he was onscreen.Beautiful African countryside. So much an improvement on Mogambo w/Gable,Gardner.This movie really had something to say.
The true story of an amazing woman who defied the cultural expectations of her generation. Streep gives a great preformance portraying this character whose real life was more dramatic than most fiction. The colonialism of the European countries is examined as a subtext in this film and is in itself a provocative subject. A must see film.
I have to say that I believe Meryl Streep to be the best female actor of contemporary times. Every role she undertakes, she masters with sheer perfection. Her range is limitless, her abilities are boundless and her beauty is ageless. The chemistry generated between herself and Robert Redford is classic. It's easy to see how, with such a magnificent backdrop and such great acting, this film garnered the industry's highest award. Great Film, superb direction and spectacular production.
I caught most of the film Out of Africa in December when it was shown on TCM. I had not seen it since I saw it at the movies when it came out. Well, it was like seeing if for the first time for me. I have grown emotionally and time and raising a family has brought a new prospective on things. I cried at parts I didn't even remember were in the movie, and have thought about it so many times since seeing it a few weeks ago. I would suggest to anyone who has not seen it in some time, to watch it again. The music in it is haunting. Happy viewing!
